“A point that will boost our morale”

The 05ers’ reaction from Leipzig

Jonny Burkardt: “I felt that it was a penalty at the end, but I’ve not seen it again yet. The referee explained that I stuck my foot out. Above all, we can be thankful that we had an incredibly good goalkeeper who rescued us with some unbelievable saves. The fans rightly congratulated him – he deserved it. We had too few phases to get our breath back. We didn’t keep hold of the ball often enough. Normally, Leipzig would win the game based on what happened. We’ll take the point though – it’s good for us and we’ll go home with a good feeling. Now we’re looking forward to two consecutive home games at the MEWA ARENA.

Robin Zentner: It wasn’t a surprise that I had so much to do against a top side – you wouldn’t expect anything else. We struggled at the start and the belief that we could take home all three points was only there for the first time at the end. At the end of the day, I’m pleased with the draw and the clean sheet because we defended passionately. We fought for it – this is the mentality that we need. Now we’ll focus on Darmstadt, where a completely different game awaits us. We’ll keep going tomorrow.”

Josuha Guilavogui: “We can’t come here and expect to have a multitude of chances. You just have to look at their team. Before half time, we were definitely sitting a bit too deep, but we had a plan and could even have won it at the end. This point is huge in the situation we’re in though. I have to hand it to Robin. He saved us many times and contributes a lot to the team. Mainz 05 were difficult to play against, and we want to build on that now in the next few weeks. We’ll take on every challenge ahead of us.”

Martin Schmidt: “We defended compactly and put up a fight. That was the fight we’re showing in the battle against relegation in a nutshell. We definitely needed a bit of luck to get the point. Getting something was the main aim. We had a superb Robin Zentner in goal, and his performance today was good for him and for us. We didn’t do much with the ball and we were too nervous at the start and gave it away too quickly. That increased the pressure, because we couldn’t get out. It got better though after the substitutions in the second half. We can improve, but we’ll take the point today. The incident with Jonny at the end is difficult to take, because the penalty could have been given. It’s a point that will boost our morale and help us on our way.”
