“A tough one to take”

Post-match reaction following the defeat in Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg 4-3 1. FSV Mainz 05

Niko Bungert: “We are really frustrated right now. It feels wrong to go home empty-handed after doing so much right. We were both dominant and mature and everything still seemed to be going our way until shortly before the end. Despite the defeat, we are still full of praise for the performance. We dominated a Wolfsburg team that has shown its quality in recent weeks. We performed well in every regard. We were good on the ball, we defended well and we gave it our all in terms of running and fight, so it’s a really tough one to take today but we are proud nevertheless. The first three goals we conceded were each very unfortunate and could have been prevented. On the whole, though, we have been doing really well in recent weeks.”

"We gave it our all"

Stefan Bell: “The game was entertaining and fast-paced but unfortunately ended badly for us. We made two mistakes late on, gifting them goals and that really hurts. All in all, it was still a good performance and the goals we conceded were just cheap ones. It was fun, though, playing the way we did and with so much determination but four goals conceded is too many. We did a lot of things well, never gave in and had chances to grab a fourth ourselves at 3-2. We perhaps sat a bit too deep too often during the second period and faced a lot of free-kicks from good positions. We needed to be a bit cleverer towards the end.”

Paul Nebel: “First and foremost, I’m obviously disappointed. We would have liked to have taken three points but at least one after they got it back to 3-3, so it’s a bitter pill to swallow. Of course it’s nice to have got the goals, but I would have preferred a win. We demonstrated a lot of good things and were very dominant in the first half. We also began the second half positively. We became a bit too passive towards the end and didn’t go for it as much and that’s a dangerous pattern to fall into when Wolfsburg are putting in cross after cross with the threatening strikers they have. That was one of the factors in us not being able to secure the game.”
