“Actually unbelievable”
FSV reaction following the defeat against Freiburg
1. FSV Mainz were better than SC Freiburg on Sunday afternoon according to lots of statistics. The 05ers had far more of the ball with 61%, had seven shots more than Freiburg with 20, put in more crosses and had 14 corners. FSV also had plenty of good chances. However, Jan Siewert’s side registered a zero in the most important category (goals), with SC Freiburg scoring one. Michael Gregoritsch slotted home from a long throw-in in the second half, scoring the only goal of the game at the MEWA ARENA. “It’s actually unbelievable how you can fail to win a game like that,” Martin Schmidt said following the bitter defeat. “Based on the opportunities that we had, we should’ve picked up at least a point,” FSV’s sporting director went on to say.
Martin Schmidt: “The efficiency in the box, the accuracy, the final action – that’s what was lacking today. It was good up until the penalty area, but then we overcomplicated things, rather than getting shots off at goal. We were unlucky with our big chances. From my point of view, it was an undeserved defeat – it was in our hands and we should’ve won the game. Going 1-0 down killed our momentum a little bit. From that moment, we didn’t create good openings as often. It feels like every ball landed on a Freiburg head and then when something got through, as was the case at the very end, they also managed to get a foot in. It wasn’t to be today, which is a shame given the performance.”
