Anwar El Ghazi is a Zerofiver

The 28-year-old Dutchman, who has experience playing on the international stage, has transferred to Mainz 05 and will be a great asset to the team’s attacking unit.

1. FSV Mainz 05 have signed Anwar El Ghazi, who was most recently under contract at PSV. The forward played 32 competitive games for PSV in the past season (5 of which were in the Europa League) where he scored ten goals (3 assists), and has signed a contract with FSV until the end of the 2024/25 season.

El Ghazi has a wealth of experience playing for clubs around the world – in addition to the Eredivisie (a total of 94 games, 28 goals and 15 assists for PSV and Ajax), the Dutchman has also played for LOSC Lille in Ligue 1 (39 games, 5 goals, 4 assists), as well as Aston Villa and Everton in the Premier League (73 games, 15 goals, 5 assists). His CV also lists 29 Europa League and Champions league appearances, as well as two caps for the Netherlands.

What the managing director for sport and head coach had to say

Managing director for sport Christian Heidel: “We had to react to the current injury situation in the squad and have been able to do that perfectly with the signing of Anwar El Ghazi. He doesn’t just bring a wealth of international experience, but also is coming off the back of a season with lots of games and a complete pre-season including match action with PSV Eindhoven until 1st September. We were already looking at him in the summer, but he would have required a transfer fee. It’s different now, so we made contact accordingly.”

Head coach Bo Svensson: “With the transfer of Anwar we’ve been given the chance to strengthen our attack with a player who’s already had an impressive career. With his ability in one-vs-one situations, his pace and his keenness to get on the ball, he’ll make us better. We’re very pleased that Anwar’s joined us.”

El Ghazi: “I’m very happy to have found a great team in Mainz 05”

“I’m very happy to have found a great team in Mainz 05. The discussions with the club were very positive and caring and I saw immediately that they’re putting their trust in me, which is very important for a player. I also spoke with Phillipp Mwene, who I know well from Eindhoven and he also really recommended Mainz 05. I’m the type of player who likes to create goalscoring chances from winning the ball back and is always looking for the quickest way to goal. Now I’d like to help the Zerofivers with goals and assists to win games and have a successful season,” says Anwar El Ghazi.
