Frustration after losing focus

Post-match reaction from the MEWA ARENA

Mainz 05 - Werder Bremen 1:2 (1:1)

Niko Bungert: “It’s too bad that we ended up losing a game like that, after we had done well for long stretches of the match. We weren’t able to take advantage of the period after their red card. Werder then caught us on the counter and put the game to bed. It was definitely a shock and a moment that significantly impacted the game. We were unable to come back after that. In a phase of play like that, we need to be able to get the ball in front of goal more often and create chances. When you’re playing against ten men, it can’t be the case that you concede a goal like that.”

Dominik Kohr: “We’re frustrated because we wanted the three points and and are standing here empty-handed despite having the man advantage. That simply cannot happen. Our game plan was actually going well, because we were able to dominate for much of the game. Bremen are strong on the counter, which is why we need to take a hard look at the way we were caught out in defence. We need to find the right balance.”

Moritz Jenz: “It was an intense match which we had under control. We didn’t defend well on their second goal and weren’t clinical enough. We might have been a bit overconfident after they had a man sent off and forgot to focus on having enough players back to defend. We were in control for much of the game. On a personal level, my first home game was a great experience and one I’m proud of. I can feed off the energy in the stadium and we can build on this.”
