"Need to work on our precision and be more clinical"

Post-match reaction following defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt

"It doesn't feel good at all," was what FSV captain Silvan Widmer had to say after his side's narrow 1-0 defeat away at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Eagles triumphed after a lucky break that allowed Mario Götze to score the winning goal in the 73rd minute. The match had seen few chances up until that point, as the hosts managed to wrench all three points away from the Zerofivers on Friday evening. "You'd expect it to end 0-0," sporting director Martin Schmidt commented afterwards. "In general, neither side had any chances." Unlike the hosts, who managed to take the lead from out of nowhere, FSV struggled to create chances and pose a threat on goal.

Post-match reaction from Frankfurt

Martin Schmidt: "In general, neither side had any chances. You'd expect it to end 0-0, but instead it was determined by a matter of millimetres. It's typical – you're defending well and something like that ends up being the difference. In the end, we're left empty-handed. We have to keep going. We did well for long periods of the match but lacked bravery in attack and didn't create anything."

Silvan Widmer: "It doesn't feel good. We've once again suffered a narrow defeat after coming close to taking something from the game. We're not generating any threat on goal. It's the whole team that needs to step up in order to attack those key areas. Up until the moments leading up to the goal, our defence looked solid. After Frankfurt scored, we weren't able to play controlled passes up the pitch and the ball often came straight back. We need to work on our precision and be more direct when attacking. We need to continue to focus solely on ourselves, make sure we pick up points and win games."

Dominik Kohr: "We lost the game due to a single shot that fell right at Mario Götze's feet. It wasn't like we had allowed them 10 clear-cut chances or anything like that. I'm satisfied with the team's performance because we fought hard and played the Mainz 05 way, which is what we need to do in a relegation battle. Right now, luck just isn't on our side and we're unable to get the ball into the back of the net in order to take the lead and then push for a second goal. I don't feel like we're playing scared. Everyone believes that we can do it. Frankfurt didn't play good football at all and still picked up three points. I would rather that we had been the ones to play poorly and still win. We will fight until the final matchday to stay in the Bundesliga. I'm convinced that we will manage to stay up, even if today we're left feeling frustrated at the way we lost. Our next challenge will be against Bremen next weekend and I'm confident that we will be able to take something from that game."
