Reaction to the Pokal defeat against FC Bayern

Quotes from within the Mainz camp after being knocked out by the competition’s record winners

Niko Bungert: “The mood wasn’t obviously very good in the dressing room at half time. We all agreed that we wanted to leave the pitch with our heads held high and to keep the score down. Bayern made a few changes, but they still had lots of quality on the pitch. We put in a solid performance then, which we also did at times in the first half. You’re always going to have to face a few chances against Bayern. Their second goal wouldn’t have stood in the Bundesliga. Their two quickfire goals on the stroke of half time left us fearing that it could get much worse, but the lads did well in the second half. That was a positive and they showed some real heart again.”

Robin Zentner: “Everybody was up for it, but it simply didn’t work out this evening. We took a while to get any attacks going of our own in the first half. We weren’t tactically clever enough without the ball. I was really frustrated going into the dressing room at half time, but a game lasts 90 minutes. We had to regroup and try to make the best of it. We wanted to at least restore some pride in the second half. We defended well as a unit and then kept things tight. That was okay, but on the ball, we struggled. Our Pokal dream ending definitely hurts, it’s frustrating. We’ll dust ourselves down and start preparing for Freiburg tomorrow.”
