“That’s the next challenge”

The 05ers’ reaction from the MEWA ARENA

Martin Schmidt: “We failed to wrap the game up in the first half. It was one of the few first periods this season that we’ve dominated, and we took the lead exactly how we would have wanted – with a brilliant goal. Even after the break, we still had control of the game, until we lost the ball in the middle of the pitch. After the equaliser, we were on the back foot for a bit. At the end, we took back control of the game, but it was hard to go for the win with ten men. The first hour of the game gives us hope, and we also impressed in a footballing sense.”

Jonny Burkardt: “We had Gladbach completely pinned back before half time, and created some good chances. It was really fun and we had a lot of energy. In the second period, Gladbach made some changes and we didn’t do as well with the second balls, and didn’t play out from the back as smoothly. They then scored a goal with their first chance. That knocked the wind out of us mentally, and we lost a bit of bravery and confidence. In the end, 1-1 is okay.”

Josh Guilavogui: “I really wanted the three points, but we didn’t manage to build on our first-half performance after the break. We had to have scored at least one goal before that. We created less afterwards. That’s the next challenge – to keep going for a full 90 minutes. It feels like two points dropped. Unfortunately, after the break, we gave the ball away, and we knew that these counterattacking situations were their strength. They had no chances before that. Robin saved us several times after that. But if so much goes right before half time and the plan comes off, you have to score the second goal.”

Silvan Widmer: “Before the break was probably our best half of the season. We dominated the opponent and had them penned in. We could have scored a second or third goal. In the second half, they rattled us a bit with their changes and the goal. We know how well we can play though. In the first half, we did exactly what we’re capable of. We have to keep that going for a full 90 minutes. No ifs or buts. We’ll approach the game in Munich exactly like any other and try to pick up points.”
