"Disappointed not to come away with anything today"

Post-match reaction from the 05ers following defeat away to Hoffenheim

Nelson Weiper had numerous chances to score against Hoffenheim but without success.

Hoffenheim 2-0 FSV

Niko Bungert: “We gave it a lot today and at least deserved to get a goal back. We repeatedly managed to get into threatening positions and a goal would have sparked the considerable crowd into life. We lacked the awareness we needed for the goals we conceded and therefore trailed for most of the contest. With Paul’s red card it’s one of those cases where you still need to have your wits about you, even in the 94th minute. Jonny and Nadiem were obviously big misses today but it’s unlikely that they would have prevented us allowing the goals we did today.”

Robin Zentner: “The decisive factor today was the fact that we switched off for each of the goals. I think we were the better team by some distance during the second half and even before half-time. Hoffenheim going 2-0 up did not tell the whole story. They did not attempt to come out and play so that was particularly frustrating to concede as a result of long balls forward. We repeatedly got forward and created chances so it’s annoying that we couldn’t find consistent accuracy in our efforts on goal. When Mainz 05 have two Germany internationals missing that’s going to be noticeable and that’s obvious. However, the lads that came in for them did a good job.”

Danny da Costa: “Our performance was a committed one and I don’t think it was a bad display away from home. First and foremost, the effort we showed did not deserve to go unrewarded but we just could not seem to get the ball over the line. The rest then just comes down to the goals we shipped. We completely switched off for the opener which simply cannot happen. I then think that there was a foul in the build-up to the second goal so that’s annoying it wasn’t given. Nevertheless, we were caught out by a simple counter so it was cheap goal to give away. Other than that though, we controlled the game and defended the majority of things well otherwise. We will continue to work hard and with full focus and, anyway, we don’t have time to worry too much about the result today.”
