Widmer’s Switzerland win EUROs opener

His side could qualify for the knockout stage on Wednesday

Silvan Widmer’s Switzerland made the perfect start to the EUROs at the weekend with a deserved 3-1 victory over Hungary in Cologne. The 05ers’ captain started as usual on the right flank before being replaced by Stuttgart’s Leonidas Stergiou in the 68th minute. Kwadwo Duah, Michel Aebischer and Breel Embolo all scored for Murat Yakin’s side, while Barnabas Varga found the net for Hungary.

Switzerland could confirm their passage into the Round of 16 with another win over Scotland in Cologne on Wednesday evening (21:00 CEST), though a draw would also put them in a very strong position. Widmer and his countrymen will then take on Germany in their final group game on Sunday (21:00 CEST) in Frankfurt. Julian Nagelsmann’s side beat Scotland 5-1 in their opening game on Friday 14th June, and will next face Hungary in Stuttgart on Wednesday (18:00 CEST).
