The Dane Jonas Lössl has not been in Mainz for very long, but he is already extremely happy in his new home. “I love the atmosphere in the town”, says the keeper, who has moved to the Rhine from the tranquil town of Guingamp in France. During his first encounter with the media he answered the questions in English, but he wants to change that as quickly as possible. “I am still a bit too shy to speak German, but I understand most of it”, says Lössl, who does not only want to improve his language skills.
He will develop his game further alongside Stephan Kuhnert. His work with his new goalkeeping coach has already started to pay off, and the Dane enjoyed his first 45 minutes in goal in the friendly against Alzey. “My first goal is to be number one at the start of the season. I have already been given that shirt number, but now I need to prove myself”, states Lössl, who sees the Europa league as a big challenge.
Another big challenge would have been EURO 2016 in France, which he just missed out on with Denmark. “It was difficult to watch the EUROs on TV”, he admits. He wants to improve his status in his national team through his performances in the Bundesliga. He is currently second choice behind Kasper Schmeichel, of English champions Leicester City. “Mainz is a fantastic step for me, but being number one for Denmark is currently out of my hands. However, as I improve, so will my chances”, says Lössl.
