A small contribution for the people in Ahrtal
The charity match between a team representing the Rhine-Ahr region and Mainz 05 was “a successful event all round”, bringing joy to the fans and raising money for a good cause
Far more important than the result of this Saturday’s charity game between 1. FSV Mainz 05 and a team representing the Rhine-Ahr region was the reason for this friendly at the Adenauer Eifelstadion. By contesting this friendly in Ahrtal, the 05ers raised awareness for the region where the lives of numerous inhabitants were acutely affected by devastating flooding in summer 2021. Approximately 2,500 spectators saw the 05ers score 13 goals and were entertained with other activities throughout the day. The proceeds from the charity match will go to the Lebenshilfe Kreisvereinigung Ahrweiler e.V. and help support various sporting and social programs for persons with disabilities.
“That’s a small contribution from us for those who were affected by the situation here”
“What happened on the pitch today was less important,” emphasised Bo Svensson. “I’m pleased that nobody got injured and that we managed the game well. Today was about making our presence felt in the region and supporting the projects. That’s a small contribution from us for those who were affected by the situation here.”
The 05 head coach saw his side score seven goals in the first half and six in the second. The Dane was probably even more pleased by the fact that his captain could return to the pitch after a long injury layoff. “It was a great feeling to finally pull on the shirt again. For me personally, it’s the first step and hopefully it continues in this vein,” said Silvan Widmer, who also highlighted the reason for the match: “We’re very happy to support this cause. The renovation and repair work in the region is still not over. If we can play a part in that, it’s even better.”
“A successful event all round”
Stefan Bell, who himself comes from the region, described the match as “a successful event all round.” “I feel that the people here in the region want to look to the future and manage to come through this. The mood was good, lots of money was raised and so I only saw happy faces.”
