Jonny Burkardt & Nadiem Amiri called-up by Germany
Two 05ers make the Germany squad for the first time – Amiri: “We want to do the fans proud”

Mainz’s positive form of late has not gone unnoticed by Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who has selected two of the 05ers’ key figures for his latest squad, with a pair of fixtures against Italy on the horizon.
Alongside Jonny Burkardt, who received his first call-up and made his Germany debut in the autumn, Nadiem Amiri has also been nominated (five previous caps), with his last selection for the national side coming as many as four years ago. Both will be hoping to assist in Germany’s quest to reach the Nations League semi-finals. The first match is set to take place next Thursday in Milan, before the second leg kicks off on the following Sunday in Dortmund.
For the two standout performers for Mainz in what has already been a campaign full of highlights, this was another to add to the list. Amiri even revealed that he was in tears following his call-up.
"It had been my dream for such a long time"
“I am extremely proud and extremely happy to have been selected again. Julian Nagelsmann told me that I would be called-up a couple of days ago already and I am really pleased that I can join up with the senior squad once more. That obviously makes me all the more excited for our next game against Freiburg,” explained Jonathan Burkardt after his latest nomination.
“It had been my dream for such a long time to be able to be called-up to the Germany squad again. I have been working hard every day to continue to improve and after I got that call from national team coach Julian Nagelsmann on Tuesday to tell me I had been selected, I was in tears. Nevertheless, even though I am really happy about my call-up, focus remains until Monday on our upcoming clash with Freiburg. Our league form is the reason why Mainz 05 have now had two players nominated for the Germany squad and we now want to do the fans proud – in a Mainz shirt as well as that of Germany.
We are obviously unbelievably proud of Jonny and Nadiem, whose call-ups are more than deserved. They both possess undeniable quality on the ball but have also worked incredibly hard in order to achieve this nomination, which serves as a recognition of their great performances. Their teammates should also feel proud of the fact that there are two Mainz players in the Germany squad for the first time. They have also had a hand in this achievement,” board member for sport Christian Heidel gleefully reported after the nominations.
