FSV make it two wins from two against Basara
Henriksen: “We did what we set out to do”
1. FSV Mainz 05 thrashed FC Basara Mainz 8-0 at the Bruchwegstadion on Friday to secure their second win of pre-season. The friendly, which drew a crowd of over 1,200, marked Basara’s tenth anniversary. There was a party atmosphere in the air for the game, and the Verbandsliga outfit acquitted themselves admirably despite the scoreline, even coming close to grabbing a goal of their own.
“We had a better opponent today than we did at the weekend. We did what we set out to do. The game was also an important one for building up match fitness, which is what the first few weeks of pre-season are all about. The players who were missing today are just suffering from minor ailments – there are no major problems. Next week Hanche-Olsen, Lee and Gruda will join us, so the group will be bigger. The boys did well and could certainly have scored a few more goals. We now have the weekend off, which will do us good. We’ll be back at it on Monday,” said head coach Bo Henriksen after the match.
Müller breaks through stubborn Basara
The visitors were not overawed by the occasion in the opening stages, pressing high and disrupting FSV’s build-up play. They were almost rewarded for their early aggression when Daniel Batz was caught out by a backpass from Jason Amann, but the Mainz goalkeeper was just about able to clear the ball from the goal line. After that, the Bundesliga side grew into the game and began to carve out chances. Basara ‘keeper Felix Pohlenz was called into action first to stop a Nadiem Amiri shot from distance, and he went on to make a stunning stop to deny debutant Nikolas Veratschnig on the rebound. Ludovic Ajorque spurned a headed chance on 13 minutes, but it was clear that an opener was coming for the hosts, and so it proved as Amiri brilliantly teed up Tim Müller to make it 1-0 from close range (23’). The 05ers’ narrow lead would become a more commanding one before half time, with Ajorque making amends for his earlier miss (38’) before Armindo Sieb slotted home coolly from ten yards (40’). The attacker could have had a first-half brace, but after running from the halfway line, he was unable to beat Pohlenz for a second time (43’).
FSV clinical late on
Only Paul Nebel and Philipp Schulz kept their places in the team for the second half, as Henriksen made nine substitutions at the break. The wholesale changes did not slow his side down, and could have made a flying start to the half if not for two solid stops from Pohlenz in the 50th minute. Basara defended valiantly for a while, but eventually FSV broke through again – Marco Richter made it four with a clinical finish from the edge of the box (65’). Two minutes later, Edimilson Fernandes saw a shot on target saved, this time by substitute goalkeeper Yuzuki Morioka. At the other end, Khaled Abou Daya almost scored a consolation goal for Basara, but Lasse Rieß made a brilliant save from the onrushing attacker (69’). The 05ers turned on the afterburners for the final fifteen minutes – Tom Krauß, Richter and Nebel scored in quick succession to make it 7-0, before the latter added the final goal in the 90th minute after being sent through by Richter.
