Burkardt & Amiri record statement win in Italy while Lee & Mwene both rack up draws

It has been a tumultuous few days for Jonathan Burkardt und Nadiem Amiri, who not only received call-ups to the latest Germany squad but both in fact made the starting line-up as their side won 2-1 in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final tie away to Italy. Burkardt was substituted at half-time for Borussia Mönchengladach’s Tim Kleindienst, with his replacement going on to score the equalising goal. Amiri played 66 minutes before being withdrawn.
“It was a great feeling to be back out on the pitch in a Germany shirt. I gave it my all and I’m really pleased that we were able to get the win. It was a great evening but only the first step. Nevertheless, we were dominant and deserved the victory,” analysed Amiri after full-time. The Germans hope to get the job done when they host Italy in Dortmund for their second leg on Sunday.
Phillipp Mwene and Jae-sung Lee both had to settle for a draw in their respective fixtures as neither Austria nor South Korea could hold onto 1-0 leads against Serbia and Oman.
Paul Nebel and Nelson Weiper are first in action during the ongoing international break on Friday evening, when they and the Germany U21s travel to face Slovakia (kick-off 18:00 CET). Andreas Hanche-Olsen has to wait until Saturday to feature with Norway when the defender clashes with Moldova at 18:00 CET.
