Returning to Mainz after a successful international break
Amiri and Burkardt reach Nations League semi-final with Germany / Nebel and Weiper to face Spain in Darmstadt on Tuesday with Germany U21s
Nadiem Amiri and Jonathan Burkardt have returned to Mainz after a successful international break with Germany. A 3-3 draw in the second leg of their Nations League quarter-final against Italy was enough to put the team through to the semi-finals. Burkardt was an unused substitute in Dortmund, while Amiri was brought on in the 63rd minute for Leon Goretzka. Despite conceding a late equaliser in injury time, Germany were able to advance by virtue of their 2-1 win in the first leg (5-4 on agg.).
The finals will take place this summer in Germany. The hosts will face Portugal in the semi-finals in Munich on 4th June, with Spain and France facing each other in the other semi-final the following day. The final will take place on 8th June in Munich.
Philipp Mwene was also in action on Saturday evening as Austria fell to a 2-0 defeat in Serbia. The defender was taken off at half time, as Austria missed out on promotion to League A.
Four 05ers in action on Tuesday
Paul Nebel, Nelson Weiper, Jae-sung Lee and Andreas Hanche-Olsen will all return to Mainz in mid-week in order to pick up preparations for this weekend's away game in Dortmund (Sunday, 30th March at 17:30 CEST). Nebel and Weiper will come up against Spain U21s in Darmstadt on Tuesday (20:30 CET) in what will be their second friendly of the international break. Former 05er Brajan Gruda had scored the winner for the Germany U21s in their previous friendly against Slovakia U21 on Friday evening.
Meanwhile, Lee and South Korea will come up against Jordan as part of World Cup qualifying on Tuesday. Elsewhere, Hanche-Olsen was an unused substitute in Norway's 5-0 win over Moldova on Saturday, as they got their World Cup qualification campaign off to a winning start. They will now face Israel in Hungary on Tuesday.
