Jonathan Burkardt signs contract extension until 2027
Burkardt: ”I'm very happy at this club and am fired up to play my part so that we can turn things around in the second half of the season”
Jonathan Burkardt is to remain at 1. FSV Mainz 05. The attacker, who has played for the Zerofivers since U14 level, signed a three-year extension on his contract which was set to expire in the summer on New Year’s Day, keeping him at the club until 2027. The 23-year-old has demonstrated his commitment to the club for whom he made his Bundesliga debut in the autumn of 2018. Burkardt has since made 98 appearances for Mainz 05’s first team, scoring 18 goals. Burkardt, who made his comeback a few weeks ago after a long spell out through injury, was named captain of Germany U21s, during which time he won the U21 European Championship.
“Despite still being young, Jonny Burkardt is an important player and figure at Mainz 05. He’s a real threat in front of goal, has good footballing instincts, he’s sharp, and he also contributes greatly to our pressing, which makes him an extremely versatile player that embodies the football we play here to a tee. His sporting development is also a great symbol for the success of our academy. He’s a positive, down-to-earth leader, but also a team player who has real drive. He had a difficult time whilst injured, but he fought his way back to fitness remarkably. We’re really pleased to have him back on the pitch, and of course, that we can continue working with him,” said Christian Heidel, sporting chairman of 1. FSV Mainz 05.
Jonathan Burkardt: “I’m very grateful to the board members of Mainz 05 and to the fans for the trust, the support and the patience they gave me during my spell on the sidelines. Now that I’m back to full fitness and can look forward to the future positively, it’s the right time to sign a contract extension – I wanted to wait for the right moment. I’ll have been a Zerofiver for ten years come this summer, I’m very happy at this club and am fired up to play my part so that we can turn things around in the second half of the season.”
