Niko Bungert: “We delivered an outstanding display and showed a lot of passion. At times, you could see what Stuttgart are capable of but our three lads up top put them under pressure and cut out a lot of things at the source. That meant they had to play a lot of long balls which led to them losing possession so in those terms it was a great team performance in every aspect. We were both diligent in defence and composed up top. We saw out the game in great style against a really good team. Nelson worked really hard and had an unbelievable game. He did the basic right while also demonstrating his goalscoring ability and making some useful runs. It hasn’t gone exactly his way for an extended period now, but to come back with such a convincing showing is a testament to his character. The fact that he had to come off with cramp at the end is a clear example of his commitment.”
Nadiem Amiri: “We performed brilliantly both with and without the ball. We gave a great response after recent disappointment. It always serves us well when we go into duels with determination because winning those then makes everything else come naturally. That high level of intensity has to be a minimum requirement for us though, always bringing that desire and aggression. I have been at the club for a year now and it is crazy to think about all that has happened in that time. We want to achieve more than just survival in the league and we wouldn’t be training every single day if that was simply the aim. We have reason to believe in ourselves but have to remain level-headed at the same time.”
Nelson Weiper: “It was an unbelievable feeling being selected for the starting line-up again after such a long time and then to score the goal to help us get the three points. The coach let me know yesterday that I would be playing and gave me my instructions. I gave it everything and tried my best to do just that. I haven’t ever thought about transfers because I have always been assured that I will get my chance in the team. I love playing for Mainz. This is my club.”
