Mwene and Austria win the group, Widmer suspended for round of 16
Mainz’s two players at EURO 2024 reach the knockouts with Austria and Switzerland respectively
The two 05ers at EURO 2024 have both made it into the round of 16. After Silvan Widmer and Switzerland secured second place in their group with a 1-1 draw against Germany – they will face Italy in Berlin on Saturday night (18:00 CEST) – Phillipp Mwene and Austria also booked their place on Wednesday night. Having started their first two group games, the full-back was an unused substitute for the 3-2 win over the Netherlands that secured top spot in Group D.
Austria will now play the team that finishes second in Group F on Tuesday in Leipzig, which will be either Turkey, Czechia or Georgia. Mainz captain Widmer won’t feature in Switzerland’s clash with Italy after being issued his second yellow card of the tournament against Germany.
