Paul Nebel to remain at Mainz until 2027
The 21-year-old spent the last two seasons out on loan at second-division side Karlsruher SC, but is now set to return to Mainz as an “experienced first team player”, according to Heidel.
Paul Nebel will return to the 05ers and extend his contract with his former club, which was scheduled to expire at the end of the upcoming season, until 2027. The midfielder was sent out on loan to 2. Liga side Karlsruher SC, where he made 68 appearances in competitive fixtures, scoring nine goals and providing 17 assists.
Nebel was involved in the academy setup at Mainz from 2016, and was selected to represent the German national team starting with the U15s. The midfielder also became the youngest ever 05er at the time to make his first team debut, which saw him come off the bench in the DFB-Pokal clash against TSV Havelse in September 2020 at just 17 years old. After making a name for himself at the club, Nebel proceeded to appear in 14 Bundesliga fixtures for Mainz over the following two seasons.
Christian Heidel and Paul Nebel on the contract extension:
“We’re delighted to have Paul Nebel back in our first team squad for the upcoming season. He’s put in some strong performances and made a name for himself in the second division over the past two years, so sending him out on loan definitely had the desired effect. Paul’s now come back to us as an experienced first team player, who’s technically stronger, more agile, and a very flexible attacker – he’s an open and confident guy who will add a lot of value to our squad,” praised board member for sport Christian Heidel.
“Spending two years at Karlsruher SC really helped with my personal development, so I’m very grateful for my time there. I am, however, really happy to be back in Mainz. It’s like coming home for me, but also feels like the start of a new chapter and the next step in my development. I can hardly wait to step foot in the MEWA ARENA once again and do my bit towards Mainz 05’s success,” Nebel explained.
