Sandro Schwarz: “We knew that it would be an extremely difficult game and that we would need to be patient. In terms of our intensity, you cannot compare us to how we played on Wednesday. Both teams had few goalscoring opportunities, Hertha did well and were organised. We still were not tenacious enough for a long time. That came after the break. We were closing them down well before the penalty and we are incredibly happy to come away with a positive result after the match on Wednesday. That was very, very important, so we can go home today feeling good.”
Pal Dardai: “Credit to Mainz. We let very little through in the first half and put in a decent performance. Things were going as we expected them to. But there was not a lot going forward, meaning that we went into the break having had no shots on goal, something I couldn’t really get my head around. It was an aggressive game and looked like it might be heading towards a draw. Mainz then used the penalty situation to their advantage and also deserved to win because we unfortunately weren’t able to take Vedad’s chance to equalise. We have to accept that and now recover quickly.”
