Danny da Costa extends with 05ers
31-year-old defender signs new one-year deal

Danny da Costa has extended his contract with 1. FSV Mainz 05 by one year until 2026. The deal also includes an option for a further one-year extension. The 31-year-old arrived at Bruchweg initially on loan in January 2021, before signing permanently on a free from Eintracht Frankfurt in summer 2022. He has since made 81 of his 194 competitive appearances in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal for the 05ers. Da Costa has established himself at centre-back this season, becoming a staple of Bo Henriksen’s defensive line.
“Danny has taken another step forward in his development as a player this season, in what was a fairly unfamiliar position for him. For him to come out the other side of what was a difficult summer for him and be stronger for it is testament to his character. Danny has shown what is achievable when you don’t let your head drop when faced with disappointment, keep working hard and open up new prospects for yourself. He continues to show week in, week out just how good of a Bundesliga centre-back he is,” said Mainz’s sporting director, Niko Bungert.
Danny da Costa: “It’s an absolute joy to come to training every day and to share the pitch and fight for points in the Bundesliga with this team. I’ve been here for over four years now and we’ve experienced a lot together during that time - we've suffered a lot together, but we've also celebrated together. I feel like we’re building something here and I’m delighted that I will continue to play my part in that.”
