The Bundesliga took a back seat this past weekend as international football came to the fore once again. Six Mainz players have been on duty with their nations and all have at least one game behind them. Here is a round-up of the action so far.
The 05ers in action on the international stage
- Phillipp Mwene and the Austria national team emerged 2-0 victors from their UEFA Nations League clash with Kazakhstan, with the 05er brought on in the 64th minute. Mwene then played the full 90 minutes of their second match against Slovenia, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
- Gabriel Vidović and the Croatia U21 national side fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Georgia during the away leg of their EUROs qualification play-off. The Mainz player did not feature. The return match will take place in the Croatian city of Rijeka on Tuesday.
- Jae-sung Lee and Hyunseok Hong enjoyed success in South Korea’s World Cup qualifier against Kuwait, winning 3-1. Lee made the starting line-up, featuring until his substitution in the 81st minute, while Hong did not see any action. The South Korea national team play again on Tuesday, this time in Amman, where they will take on Palestine with kick-off scheduled for 15:00 CET.
- Nelson Weiper suffered a 4-0 loss in England with the Germany U20s, having been introduced in the 67th minute. The Germans’ next match follows on Tuesday, when they will encounter Türkiye at 17:00 CET.
- Maxim Dal most recently played the full 90 minutes in the Germany U19s’ 3-1 win against Cyprus, that result coming off the back of an opening 2-0 victory over Andorra. The target for Monday’s clash with Hungary at 19:00 CET is therefore purely to secure top spot in the group, with passage to the second phase of EUROs qualifying already in the bag.
