VISIONS AND GOALS
1. FSV Mainz 05 e.V. is the football club of the captial of the federal state of Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany. Within its history that spans over more than a century, the club has managed to go through both ups and downs successfully and grow to become a financially stable, established club in professional German football. Despite many trials and tribulations, the club could always count on the support of the people of the city of Mainz. Eversince Mainz 05 returned into the business of professional football in the year 1990, the support of its hometown grew every year. As a result, a very special football cult has developed in Mainz, resulting from a closeness that came along with many successful fights against demotion from the Second League and two very dramatic misses of a promotion to Bundesliga 2002 and 2003. The fans of 1. FSV Mainz 05 are renowned for their unconditional and powerful support of their team, their tolerance, respect, and fairplay.
One of the highest principles of the club is to maintain its spirit despite the inevitable professionalization and commercialization. When 1. FSV Mainz 05 moved into the new stadium, the Coface Arena (now MEWA ARENA), in the summer of 2011, the special atmosphere that the old Bruchwegstadium was famous for, got transferred to the new venue pretty quickly, making it the new sportive home for 33.305 fans. Opening the Coface Arena was most certainly a milestone within the history of the club. 1. FSV Mainz 05 does not only stand for a special culture within its fan scene, but also for a special football philosophy. The basis of its style was formed by Wolfgang Frank, who was known as an innovative football coach in the 1990ies and lateral thinker. It was him who first introduced the back four and zone defence oriented to the ball into German professional soccer. Coach Juergen Klopp has refined this style of playing in the years 2001 to 2008. Eversince, football made in Mainz stands for unconditional pressing and continuous pressure on the ball possessing opponent. Thomas Tuchel, who has led the team as the head coach between 2009-2014, has extended the style of Mainz 05 to focusing on ball possession as well. The combination of Frank’s, Klopp’s, and Tuchel’s ideas have minted the game of 1. FSV Mainz 05, which shall not only be preserved but also refined furthermore. The success of 1. FSV Mainz 05 in recent times is the result of continuous preparatory work over the last decades. Within the last years, 1. FSV Mainz 05 has furthered professional structures through serious economic activities. The continued development is obvious when looking at the development of the youth sector. The youth department of 1. FSV Mainz 05 is one of the most respected in the country, having won the German championship title of U 19 in 2009 and 2023 and being part of the top German youth teams eversince. For 1. FSV Mainz 05, it is important to further develop as a club, yet without losing the virtues and philosophy that make us who we are. Priorities within the development of the club are:
